A School Built on History

Since 1875

Moonambel Primary School has been part of the local community since 1875 — but the story of education in Moonambel goes back even further.

Moonambel grew rapidly during the Victorian gold rush, with thousands of people drawn to the district in search of gold. As families began to settle in the area, the need for a school quickly became apparent.

The first school in Moonambel was established in 1861, just months after the discovery of gold in the district. It was originally operated by the Church of England and provided education for the growing mining community.

In 1875, a new government school was built on the site of our current school in Humffray Street. The new brick building opened its doors on 1 December 1875, with an enrolment of 133 students. At the time, the school was considerably larger than many schools of its kind, reflecting the growing population and the optimism surrounding Moonambel's future.

Interestingly, the school was not originally going to be built in brick. The Mining Department had initially requested a timber building because of concerns about mining rights on the site. The local community, through the Board of Advice, successfully fought to have those concerns resolved, allowing the Education Department to construct the substantial brick building that still stands today.

More than 150 years later, that same building continues to be a place where children learn, friendships are formed and generations of local families come together.

A Piece of the Past Inside Our Walls

One of the most exciting pieces of our history was uncovered during the building's renovation in 2022.

While repairing the eaves of the original brick building, carpenter Andy Rus discovered scraps of old newspaper that had been scrunched up and tucked inside the building.

The newspaper dates from late December 1887 — just 12 years after the school opened.

For us, this discovery provides a remarkable glimpse into the everyday life of the people who lived and worked in Moonambel more than a century ago. Somewhere inside the walls of our school was a tiny piece of evidence from the community that helped shape the school we know today.

The original brick building has survived remarkably well and is recognised as an important example of an early Victorian government school. Its historic character and strong connection to the local community make it a special part of Moonambel's heritage.

Today, our students learn in the same historic school building that welcomed children in 1875 — connecting each new generation with the many generations of students who came before them.

From the goldfields of the 1860s, to the opening of our school in 1875, to a forgotten newspaper hidden in our walls in 1887, Moonambel Primary School has a story worth celebrating.

And that story continues with every new student who walks through our doors.
